and canopy would be of local finely dressed granite to a
design on which the sculptor might be asked to advise and
from drawings to be supplied by you.

I enclose a plan of Statue Square in which it is
proposed to erect the statue shewing possible sites.
The
site marked F is that at present favoured but failing that
the site marked E might be made available.
Photographs of
the square and of statues already in it together with
dimensions of these statues are being prepared and will be
sent to you later.

I am to request that you will be so good as to make
all the necessary inquiries accordingly and inform me as
to any further data which may be required and what the
probable charges will be for the statue f.o.b. a port in
the United Kingdom.
The cost is to be met from public
funds and it is desirable that this Government should be in
a position early to draw up an estimate of the lowest probable
cost. For your confidential information it is considered
that the total cost of the statue including erection locally
and local materials and workmanship on foundations, pedestal
and canopy should if possible be of the order of £2,000.
7.
I need scarecly add that it is of essential
importance that the statue should be delivered here in good
time for its erection during November or December, 1940.
